Tell us something about yourself. How did you start in the industry, how many years, what’s your background.
I started out in 1998 on the gym floor before working my way into group fitness and personal training. Because of my Yoga, Pilates and dance background, I tend to focus a lot on alignment and kinesiology and I suppose that’s how I’ve come to specialize more in injury rehabilitation and pre natal fitness in the last 8 years.
What are your areas of specialization and which segment do you currently work in.
I am currently teaching in groups as well in one on one sessions. I specialise in injury rehabilitation and pre natal fitness.
The fitness market in Singapore is quite different though so I work a lot less with athletes here than I did back in NZ. I work with a lot with pre natal clients in Singapore, which is great as I really enjoy this aspect of my job.
What excites you the most about your role/industry?
I really love the work that I do and the people I work with. I love coming to work each day as I have the best clients – they are motivated and full of positive energy. It makes me so grateful that they trust me with guiding them on their health and wellness journey and this is a huge responsibility which I take a lot of pride in. The most fantastic feeling is seeing that moment when they realize how far they have come – how much stronger or fitter they are and the physical manifestations of their efforts.
What is your view on holistic health, wholesome nutrition, and an active lifestyle?
Well, I named my business Eat Train Love so I think that answers your question a little! I live by this philosophy of eating well, training hard and loving myself. These are, I feel, the 3 pillars to good health. It’s kept me healthy and happy and so it is really easy for me to share this passion with my clients and our greater community because I live and breathe it. With social media, the fashion industry and even this new wave of “fitspo” images, a lot of people associate health and fitness with certain diets or body types. Over the years, I’ve worked with so many people that fall under so much pressure to fit into these expectations that they end up viewing food and exercise as punishment, and they look at their own bodies with so much negativity. My whole purpose with Eat Train Love is to educate and guide our clients towards nurturing a healthy relationship with food, exercise and their own bodies.
What is the best advise you have gotten from your mentors/industry experts to upkeep with your health?
How do you maintain your health and your lifestyle?
Going back to the earlier question, I live and breathe the ETL philosophy! So I eat well, I train hard, and I love myself! I have a predominantly plant based diet so 80% of the time I eat plant based whole foods. And the remaining 20% would be when I eat out, indulge in home delivery or cake! My training really depends on what I have going on such as a dance recital, photoshoot or race. And when I need to, I rest! Just as important as it is to train hard, it is also important to listen to your body. Whilst I don’t do it anywhere near enough, meditation is really beneficial and this is an area which I would, on a personal as well as professional level, like to learn more about.
Which are your favorite foods, places to eat, places to travel?
I’m still navigating around the place to eat in Singapore which are great for herbivores. I love going to Bali and Sydney because there are just so many more options in terms of food.
Please share a quick super nutritious recipe to power yourself during demanding days.
I start most days with a smoothie and one of my favourite recipes is with: Almond Milk, Banana, Vega Sport Protein, Chia Seeds, Flax Seed Oil, Maca, Cacao, Peanut Butter, and Ginseng.
Please share a wellness and fitness tip that you employ on daily basis to stay in shape and be active.
Be kind rewind!
Which is your favorite food ingredient and how do you use it the most?
One of my favourite ingredients is Tempeh. I love marinating it in spices and grilling it, or adding it to curry.
We come across multiple stressful situations on daily basis as working professionals and in society. What is your favourite way to release tension and relax?
I love sitting with my cat and dog. They have such a calming presence and they remind me that we have so much to be grateful for.
What would you advise our audience to stay healthy while pursuing modern lifestyle?
I would say that it is important to focus on the positives, not just in terms of your achievements, but also on your motivations. This is the first step to building that healthy relationship with food and exercise. The impact of taking care of your body because you love it are far more sustainable than if you were to take extreme measures for short term gains.
