Meet your guide to holistic health – Alex Schmutterer!
An expert from wellness and hospitality industry, Alexandra Schmutterer ( dearly called Alex), has seen perhaps all aspects of charting, experiencing, and facilitating programmes that would take one to the lifestyle transformation. Currently, Alex teaches yoga at her own yoga centre Saakalya in Holland Village, Singapore. She also owns ventures in lifestyle products and in organizing retreats. We couldn’t be more happy to welcome Alex in our discussion session today as she is a perfect guide for us to learn about the nitty gritty of how/what/when do experts do it when it comes to “HEALTH”!!
Tell us something about yourself.
My background is in hospitality industry. I have worked with lifestyle institutes such as hotels and spas as well as with culinary institutes to draft plans on the pursuit of healthy living. As an avid health & wellness enthusiast, it is not only my profession but also passion to create and provide a platform, where I can offer a whole range of options from education and practice of wellness.
What are your areas of specialisation and which segment do you currently work in.
As mentioned, I have have majority of experience in lifestyle & wellness industry. As a yoga instructor, my personal interest and profession currently lies in enabling people with yogic wisdom. I also help organize yoga retreats and in fact everything around that can help to embrace yoga in lifestyle. I am working with partners from different industries such as Ayurveda, Yoga, Spa and Wellness products, and sound therapy.
What excites you the most about your role and holistic health industry?
I love the fact that I can work independently and pursue my interests in my professional life. Meeting and working with new partners and exploring new opportunities brings the excitement and charm of unearthing unknown and bringing it to life it in the form of new projects in another aspect. Ultimately, to see the results of my initiatives in the improvement of people’s health is what brings peace to my mind.
What is your view on holistic health, wholesome nutrition, and an active lifestyle?
This is perhaps the only way to a healthy and happy future! One would end up missing a lot, should you pursue only one aspect in any form. Health & Wellness is accomplished, when one is aware and actively pursuing their own suitable path as per diet, physical exercise, maintain stress levels, hobbies, relationships, as well as catch on sufficient sleep.
What is the best advise you have gotten from your mentors/industry experts to upkeep with your health?
Advise on holistic health!! The first time I got to know about it, I became more alert and aware of my own surroundings. Slowly, I started to imbibe every aspect into my own lifestyle. In fact, the more you get to know about health & wellness, the easier it is to convince yourself on pursuing your journey. If you fix only one thing it won’t work like a car can’t run perfectly with only one wheel in good condition!!
How do you maintain your health and your lifestyle?
I practice and preach “balance”. Eating healthy, practicing yoga, regular meditation, sleeping early, and giving rest to my body when it needs are some of the aspects of my lifestyle! Being happy and doing what you love rather than forcing myself into something just adds onto it.
Which are your favorite foods, places to eat, places to travel?
I love greens! I never eat and look at the fast food restaurants. My only choice of eateries are where you will get fresh foods. For places, it needs to offer a lot of nature and fresh air! Philippines and Indonesia top in the list of my favourites.
Please share a quick super nutritious recipe to power yourself during demanding days.
My Jamu drink is my life! It is my energizer and remedy against all kinds of ailments. I would take turmeric, tamarind, ginger, and blend it in with fresh coconut water to get world’s best drink! It helps to keep my balance, enables my body to heal, and also supports my immune system. I make it fresh and have it cold!
Please share a wellness and fitness tip that you employ on daily basis to stay in shape and be active.
Enough and quality sleep with minimum 7 hours to help my body to heal. I start my day slowly and include morning yoga with healthy breakfast (smoothie and oats with blueberries). I exercise in evening and focus on my meals with healthy snacks in between the meals.
Which is your favorite food ingredient and how do you use it the most?
TURMERIC! In Jamu, in curries, in my Jamu, in my pastas, and where ever I can.
We come across multiple stressful situations on daily basis as working professionals and in society. What is your favourite way to release tension and relax?
Yoga and meditation are the best healers against stress. To release tension out of my system, I go for forward bends in (seated / standing) forward, full forward, and seated forward bends with both legs.
What would you advise our audience to stay healthy while pursuing modern lifestyle?
Give a break to your brain and your body! Have a breather in between your busy schedules. Take a pause to pursue something that your body and mind would enjoy.
